I will provide the student materials needed for this class.
  • Everyone will get a suture practice board, steri-strips, a skin stapler and staple remover, sutures to practice with, etc. These materials will be yours.
    • I will provide the necessary surgical instruments for your use during the course.
      • If you wish to purchase a minor surgery set I will have some kits available.
    • I will also have extra skin staplers, supplies, etc. for people to buy (at my cost) if you want these to take home for your family kits.
    • I will also have some printed wound management guides, antibiotic guides, and other goodies for folks that are interested in acquiring these items.
      • I may have a few surprises available as well.
    • Unused materials like sutures, steri-strips, Tincture of Benzione ampoules, etc. that you are issued but don’t use you can take home with you.
  • Bring a notebook and writing instrument to take notes.  We will be moving through material quickly.
  • If you have a head lamp it would be a good thing to bring with you.  (This is an extremely useful tool. If you don’t have one you should probably pick one up for your kit anyway.)
  • For those that register, I will email out to you additional relevant materials prior to the course. You may want to print these off and bring them with you for a reference and note-taking.
If you’ve already picked up a wound management guide from me you may want to bring that along as well. It is a good reference that was designed to go along with the course. I will have some more printed up and available at the course for those that want buy one. I will also have my Antibiotic Guides available for any that want one.
I also recently co-authored a book on preparedness. It does have some medical prep stuff in it along with a lot of general prepping information. I will have some copies available and will personalize a copy for anybody that wants one.

STUDENTS: You do not need a medical background to take this course – it always helps, but is not essential for this one.  I am teaching a set of skills and I will include some of the surgical theory as we go along to help you understand the rationale for the techniques being taught. If you have some background medical training this class will certainly enhance the skills you already have regardless of the level of your training. The application of surgery is highly anatomy-focused, but for the learning the techniques a detailed knowledge of anatomy is not important. I have taught this same course to medical students, PA’s, and Nurse practitioners; as well as to RN’s and advanced paramedics. But also to lay people. I will adapt the curriculum and depth of the material according to the flow of the class and progress of the students. How deep we go into the topics will depend upon the aptitute of the students.
This class is essential for medics.  If you are in a team medic role you really need the equipment, knowledge, and skills necessary to care for wounds beyond first aid. This class will give you the knowledge and skills and make available to you the equipment and supplies you need. I really hope to see our medics attending this course. You do not need to be a medic to take this course.
